1. 1539 Impact of Free Trade on Canada.

The debate in Canada over Free Trade with the United States has always been heated. Both sides have consistently pointed to evidences that appear to support their own argument. There has, for instance, been reason to believe that Free Trade has had a beneficial impact on Canada. The increase in the amount of investment that has come into the country, and the decrease of tariffs that have been put on Canadian exports, has naturally entailed economic advantages. This has surely led to competition in certain economic quarters and, therefore, led to job creation. But this story is somewhat more complicated. Notwithstanding these positive aspects, which still remain debatable, the overall impact of Free Trade on Canada appears to remain negative. Because the American and Canadian relationship is uneven to begin with, it has been no surprise that the United States has benefited disproportionately to the agreement. Indeed, Canada has lost a major ability to control incoming foreign investment. In this way, it has lost its ability to control its own economy. Thus, consequently, Canada has lost even more of its sovereignty in relation to the United States. 8 pgs. 17 f/c. 7b.

4. 1606 The Economic Efficiency of Taxation in Canada.

Few would argue that our present system of taxation in Canada is an economically efficient one. While this is not entirely surprising, considering the polemical value inherent to taxation itself, it is a contention worthy of verification. Indeed, it is the objective of this paper to scrutinize the economic efficiency of taxation, with specific regard to income tax. The work of Joseph E. Stiglitz, which will be highlighted throughout this paper, proves helpful in both elucidating the issues surrounding the economic efficiency of taxation, and some possible strategies to make it more efficient. 11 pgs. 38 f/c. 5b.

5. 1688 Regional Economic Disparities In Canada: Better or Worse?

Over the past thirty years, rather than improving, it is clear to see that the regional disparities, economic and otherwise, have been getting worse. Looking to census data over the circa 1966-96 period, we can see that Eastern Canada, in particular, has fared very poorly. This paper will bring this evidence to light, and argue that, not only have regional inequalities been exacerbated in the past 30 years, but that they will continue to get worse as globalization intensifies. 4 pgs. 3 f/c. 5b.

7. 1716 The Contribution Of The Staple Theory To Canadian Economic History.

For the purposes of this paper, a staple is a product with a large natural resource content. Some part of its fabrication must take place at the spot, even if only in the trivial sense of seizing it away from nature. This paper finds that the staple theory though not perfect is the most appropriate context in which to evaluate the process of Canadian economic development. As such, it makes an enormous contribution to the study of Canadian economic history. This point will be developed by looking at the evolution of the staple theory, and by its application to the well-known historical facts of Canadian economic development. 13.5 pgs. 25 f/c. 5b.
  • Pages: 13.5
  • Bibliography: 5 source(s) listed
