The main references will be two sculptures and one painting. However, there will also be a brief discussion of the role of the Devadasis as representative of passion in religion. This special class of females had a significant part in the practice of religion which involved dance and erotic acts. This paper will use the "Salt March" of Mahatma Gandhi in 1930 as an example of civil disobedience to be analyzed with respect to the theoretical models outlined in Plato's Crito and King's "Letter from the Birmingham Jail". It will be argued that, while there exist strong arguments against civil disobedience - most notably that it often leads to violence and civil unrest - often such acts are justified, as was Gandhi's, as a means of last resort. 9 pgs. 14 f/c. 5b.

It will uncover what types of liberalizations have already taken place, and take a look at those that are presently being considered. The fundamental argument that will be woven through the paper is that the Indian government should be reticent about proceeding with further reforms until those that have already been implemented start to take effect. Moreover, without the requisite degree of political cohesion there is scarcely any point trying to take a diluted middle ground approach. 1823 The French influence in India during the 18th and 19th centuries. Historians have paid relatively little attention to the influence of the French in India. The history that has been written by the British proves to minimize the role of the French; and not surprisingly, French accounts of affairs tend to embellish the details. This paper will attempt to find this middle ground in efforts to provide an objective account of French influence in India during the 18th and 19th centuries. In the final analysis, it will be made clear that after their defeat by the British in 1783, the French played a valuable role in helping India thwart complete British domination of their country. 5 pgs. 7 f/c. 5b.
