The two pieces of artwork are the Greek ?Statue of a Kouros? and the ?Human- headed Winged Bull and Winged Lion? from Mesopotamia. As both date from approximately the same time period (590 and 880 BCE, respectively), these artworks are thus exceptional means of comparing the significance of art on different societies.

Unlike other Davids that emerged in Italy, Bernini?s is a faithful attempt to portray the young man about to slay the giant. Bernini?s David is typical of Baroque sculpture and of the art of the time. Bernini, more than any other of the four major David sculptors (including Donatello, Veroccio, and Michaelangelo), brought the real man that David was to life in marble. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the context of the work, the artist, and the work itself.
